Collision Spaces

So called “collision spaces” are all the rage. This can refer to open areas for discussion that take the place of enclosed conference rooms, areas for informal gatherings such as around coffee service, or open spaces for general work. However, this idea is taken to an extreme when removing all walls inside the workspace.

Employers want to open the workplace to promote interaction and collaboration. In the quest to have people mingle productively, some companies—including Google, Samsung, and Facebook—are betting on environments that foster unstructured and unexpected partnerships. At Samsung, leaders designed the company’s new US headquarters with vast open spaces. The company’s hope is that giving workers from varying disciplines unstructured opportunities to mingle and interact will spark innovation.

Even as the benefits of open spaces are touted by some, though, there’s a rising chorus of displeasure at open offices, both in research and anecdotally, with claims that open offices increase stress and distractions and lower productivity.

So where does that leave you if you’re creating a new office space, remodeling an old one, or simply looking for ways to make the best of your current open-office layout? We’ll look at the pros and cons of the open office and how you can create an environment that helps your employees thrive.
